Extraordinary Desserts

Last night I went to a great dessert restaurant in San Diego called Extraordinary Desserts. It’s such a fun place to go with friends, but if you ask me it’s probably even more fun to order it to go so you can eat it alone in your closet.  With both hands. No utensils. No shame.

Anyway. When you get there, before you sit down, you get to choose your dessert from a glass case at the front of the restaurant. This part is tough, but if you can make it over this massive hurdle, good things follow. Power through.

Here are some of the desserts they had last night (descriptions from the Extraordinary Desserts website) …

Dulce de Leche Cake: A crunchy milk chocolate confection is hidden between layers of chocolate cake and creamy chocolate mousse. Homemade dulce de leche finishes this over the top chocolate torte.

Hold me back.

Triple Chocolate Mousse Torte: Layers of dark chocolate cake are married with white, milk, and dark chocolate mousse, caramelized hazelnuts, and a splash of Frangelico. An exquisite and complex torte.

I don’t even love chocolate, and I was ready to dive in head first.

Devonshire Napoleons

Please. Somebody take my fork away before I do something I’ll regret.

I don’t remember what these things were, but I have a feeling it had something to do with white chocolate.

I forgot what these were too, but I’m a sucker for anything with pastry and these look incredible.

Strawberry Raspberry Cupcakes

Anyway, you get the idea. I drooled over the glass case for about 20 minutes and then our party was called. We sat down and decided on a nice bottle of sparking wine to share, and reviewed out strategy for the evening: order four different desserts and share them all.


4th Favorite Dessert: My friend Matt orderedWarm Apple Croissant Bread  Pudding with Fresh Blackberry Puree. It was buttery and warm and paired perfectly with handmade ice cream. I could kick myself for not remembering the flavor, but I do know it was something strange. Mochiavado? Musalatta?  Whatever. It was amazing.

3rd Favorite Dessert: This was the one I ordered: Blood Orange Ricotta Torte. Until last night, I would have sworn up and down this was the best dessert they sell. I was pleased to be proven wrong, but it is without a doubt absolutely delicious and I’d still recommend it to anyone, anytime. Compared to many of the cakes at Extraordinary Desserts, it’s very light and refreshing. It’s a ricotta torte soaked with fresh blood orange juice and layered with blood orange whipped cream, juicy raspberries and cranberries. Yum.

2nd Favorite Dessert: My friend Chelcea ordered this one. It’s a Passion Fruit Ricotta Torte. Although it looks quite similar to the dessert I ordered, it’s surprisingly different. It’s tropical and light and layered with passion fruit whipped cream, kiwis, strawberries and bananas. If you’re in desperate need of a vacation, but only have a few hours to spare, order this cake. You’ll return home with sand on your feet and a smile on your face. It’s exquisite.

Favorite Dessert: Congratulations, Darla! You ordered the best dessert of the night! Raspberry Cheesecake. It was creamy. It was rich. It was sweet. It was perfect. And the crust. Oh, the crust. The crust. Was. Unbelievable. Different from any cheesecake crust I’ve tasted before. I don’t know what kind of back-alley, under-the-table, shady business is able to make such an amazing cheesecake crust, but I don’t care. All I know is it was perfect. And you should try it for yourselves as soon as you possibly can. Just one request: when you go, can I come too?

  1. i went back and got the caramel macadamia nut cheesecake. realllly good. crushed macadamia nuts sprinkled throughout the crust. OK WE CAN GO AGAIN!!
