My Seven Favorite Happy Hours in Downtown Austin

So it’s finally 5 o’clock and you’re looking for the best spots to sip your way through the evening? Glad to help. I’ve rounded up a list of my seven favorite happy hours in Downtown Austin offering the sweetest deals on the best food and drink in the hood, so you can spend less time researching and more time happy houring.

You can’t go wrong with a place that serves absinthe cocktails, adult milkshakes, and more than 50 different gin, whiskey, and rum concoctions. Péché is known for mixing up some of the best pre-Prohibition style craft cocktails in Austin, and during happy hour, you can score a selection of them for $5! The French 75 is a winner, as is the Lion’s Tail, but you’d be hard pressed to find a cocktail here that’s not a winner. Aside from the drinks, you can also enjoy any food item on the menu with an asterisk for half off. If you’re feeling adventurous – and after a few Péché cocktails, I’d be willing to bet you are – try the escargot. It’s insane.

Happy Hours: All day Sunday & Monday; 4PM – 7PM Tuesday through Friday.

La Condesa

The margaritas at La Condesa are arguably the best in Austin (yes, I said it) and during happy hour, they’re all half off! In fact, every cocktail is half off! Even the fancy ones with ingredients like volcanic-saffron salt and vanilla infused brandy. You can also score great deals on a long list of unique appetizers, like jumbo lump blue crab and apple guacamole, pâté tostadas, and Mexican-style street corn. If I had to choose the ultimate happy hour pairing, I’d order the guacamole sampler, the corn, and an Alma Blanca margarita to wash it all down.

Happy Hours: 5PM – 7PM Monday through Friday.

One of the happiest of happy hours Downtown can be found at Parkside where they offer half priced beer and cocktails, as well as half off their entire bar menu, which is full of scrumptious plates like crab fritters, fried green tomatoes, grilled bar steak, and an incredible oyster platter that everyone raves about. Plus, if you go on a Monday, all specialty martinis are half off all day long. Okay, everybody. Slow clap for Chef Shawn Cirkiel. Thanks, Chef, for one of the best Happy Hour spreads in the hood.

Happy Hours: 5PM – 6:30PM Monday through Friday.

The Driskill Bar

You know what I love about The Driskill Bar? They help me get my happy hour on every single day of the week! On Mondays and Tuesdays, it’s $7 for select cocktails, on Wednesdays it’s half price wine by the glass, Thursdays mean $7 batinis and $3 Texas beers, Fridays are all about $5 margaritas and $3 Mexican beers, on Saturdays it’s $3 Texas beers, and on Sundays you can kiss your weekend goodbye with $3 domestic bottles. You can also enjoy half price bar snacks and bar bites any night of the week. Don’t miss the bacon wrapped dates. Just don’t.

Happy Hours: 5PM – 7PM Sunday through Wednesday; 4PM-7PM Thursday through Saturday.

The Bonneville

Happy hour at The Bonneville, run by Jennifer Costello and Chris Hurley: Husband and Wife Chef Team Extraordinaire, means $3 off all craft cocktails and wine by the glass, $2 off select beers, and solid deals on a lot of really great food. They offer two grilled pizzas for $7 each, as well as a selection of more adventurous fare for $6 a plate. I recommend the salt cod fritters and the mussels in a red coconut curry broth, because you should never say no to salt cod fritters or mussels in a red coconut curry broth.

Happy Hours: 4:30PM – 6:30PM Tuesday through Sunday.

Searsucker’s happy hour features $3 draft beers, $5 house wines, and $5 cocktails mixed with unique house-made infusions like strawberry jalapeño tequila and cucumber gin. They also offer great deals on a selection of small bites like beef tartare and shrimp and cheddar bacon grits. But trust us. If pork belly’s your thing (and why would it not be?), order the pork belly and eggs in hollandaise sauce. And to ensure you don’t mistakenly leave any of it behind, order the duck fat fries so you can use them to squeegee your plate clean.

Happy Hours: 4PM – 6PM Monday through Friday.

If you’re feeling classy and are in the mood for sipping wine and indulging in some fancy fare, the happy hour at Mulberry is the happy hour for you. You can enjoy $2 off all draft beer and wines by the glass, as well as 20% off all bottles of wine. But the food is what really shines here. The happy hour snacks, which are all $5, include coppa on gorgonzola crostini with honey, and panzanella made with herb-goat ricotta and tomato vinaigrette. And if a snack just won’t cut it, there are also larger happy hour plates like a grilled cheese with raclette and smoked pear, and a hamburger with bacon and a fried egg. Whatever you choose, I suggest following it up with a nice, long nap.

Happy Hours: 5PM – 7PM Tuesday through Friday.
